What is a certified midwife?

Certified Nurse Midwives

A certified nurse midwife is a licensed, practicing nurse who has advanced training in delivering babies and providing medical care for pregnant and postnatal women. As an alternative to birthing a child in a hospital setting, a woman can arrange for a home birth with a certified nurse midwife. However, nurse midwives do deliver babies in the hospital too, particularly if there are complications involved. A nurse midwife is also qualified to prescribe medication to the mother and offer help in developing birth plans.
